  • Q: What inspired you to start writing?
Having been awarded 2 gold stars as a 5-year old for creative writing, the writing bug was formed in me and I have enjoyed writing on and off ever since.
  • Q: Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
It is set primarily in Cambodia and centres on a middle-aged English travellers who unwittingly get involved with some extremely unscrupulous criminals. This threatens everything that they hold dear with murderous repercussions spilling over to England, Vietnam, China and Australia. The couple are forced into a battle for survival against overwhelming odds.
  • Q: How do you create your characters?
I first sketch out the main protagonists of the book (their histories, quirks, temperament, what makes them tick etc.), and then similar concerning the immediate family and friends who will feature in the book. Then it's about creating the personas of the other significant characters from the book, in this case hardened Asian underworld criminals who have been shaped by wars in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.
  • Q: What does your typical writing day look like?
I email myself sections of the book when I have dead time commuting, waiting for a bus etc. It does not take very long to write 2,000 words, which I then polish to appear in my book.
  • Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Seeing the first print run. Trepidation followed by pride.
  • Q: What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Sales and marketing for sure. It's a hard slog. The key is not to expect to sell tens of thousands and to remain relaxed about it whilst persevering and ignoring any setbacks.
  • Q: Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Not really. Just search engines to corroborate facts. I will never use AI.
  • Q: What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Spend good time developing your idea before diving in, including sketching out all the main characters of the book. It's a good idea to map out how they will all interact and to learn your won characters before you start writing to ensure consistency.
  • Q: How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Social media, websites, independent booksellers, library book readings and book clubs. Try to get at least one group excited about your book and build from there.
  • Q: What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I am taking a break at the moment. My next book idea will find me when I am ready.
